Grace B. Luhrs University Elementary School Library

Information for 5th Graders

There are a number of additional resource links on the "Everyone" tab at the top or left of the page. Many of these resources are appropriate for any age group. None are inappropriate, they may just be of a higher grade-level and therefore not something a student coming to this tab would use academically. Feel free to explore any tab and if there are any questions, please ask the librarian!

Audiobook "How-to" and Policy - Luhrs Library Edition

Audiobooks are able to be checked out one at a time by grades 3 and up at the Luhrs Library. This video shows how to use them and talks about the Luhrs policy and responsibilities when checking out audiobooks. If you have any questions, please email eworseno@ship.edu or call 717-477-1003 to ask.

Search Engines for Kids

  • WolframAlpha WolframAlpha is a computational search engine. If students have any questions involving numbers, Wolfram Alpha is the place to go. Wolfram Alpha can be used for other searches, but it’s not nearly as useful for general inquiries as it is for computational questions.

  • Google Scholar Google Scholar is a search engine designed to search scholarly journals, Supreme Court records, and patent records. In some cases the results will link to abstracts of books and articles that you will then have to obtain from a library or book retailer. In other cases results will link to fully viewable documents.

  • SweetSearch.com is a search engine for kids (higher elementary to middle school) where articles are approved by researchers.

  • Kids InfoBits - database used to find information on topics like animals, arts, geography, health, literature, people, social studies, and technology. If the link does not go straight to the site, use E-library card number: 2475000486538... or get your own E-card HERE.
