As part of Shippensburg University’s celebration of the 100th Anniversary of The Martin House in October 2008, students in Dr. John Bloom’s Applied History class conducted research in our campus archives, pulled together items from our SU Archives collection and created this exhibit to commemorate this special occasion. Featured in the exhibit were various documents and photos showing the beginning of the Martin House and its progression through the years.
Some of the original documents included in the exhibit were: original building floor plans; board meeting discussions about the building of Martin House; a diary of Mr. Martin that includes many notes about early entertainment in the Martin House; Martin House Historical Register documentation; a listing of all SU former presidents who resided at the Martin House; and the program inauguration for current SU President, William N. Ruud who is the current resident of Martin House.
Student researchers were unable to locate a photo of Martin House from 1908 when it was built. This 1919 photo appears to be the earliest available photo in our SU Archives collection.
