Exhibit: Banned Books Week 2022

by Heather Glasby on 2022-09-28T08:47:00-04:00 | 0 Comments

The week of September 18-24, the Ezra Lehman Memorial Library will observe Banned Books Week, an annual celebration of intellectual freedom and an acknowledgement of the challenges that controversial books face in libraries and school curricula.

In 2021, the American Library Association’s Office for Intellectual Freedom tracked 729 censorship attempts of 1,597 individual books in library, school, and university collections.

The 729 censorship attempts in 2021 represents a significant rise in attempts to ban books and materials from libraries and curricula. In 2020, only 156 challenges were recorded, of 273 books.

Be sure to visit the library during this week to see our display on banned books. For more information about Banned Books week, visit  https://bannedbooksweek.org/
