Special Collections & Rare Books

<< ShipLibrary Catalog >>

To search for books or ebooks, limit by source type in the left column

All of the books in Special Collections and the Rare Book Room can be found by searching the Library Catalog (above). If the catalog record for an item you want says:

  • Location: Special Collections -or-
  • Location: Rare Books

please write down the location (Special Collections or Rare Books), call number, and title of the item, or email yourself the catalog record. Bring this information with you when you visit Archives & Special Collections.

Special Collections and the Rare Book Room contain many books about the history of Pennsylvania and public education. To search the catalog for these materials, type in your search term (ex: "Franklin County") and click "Search". Once you have retrieved a list of search results, look at the options to limit your search results on the left hand side of the page. Scroll down until you see "Location." Expand the location options by selecting "Show More." Select the location of your choice -- "Rare Book Room" or "Special Collections." This will update your search results list to only display the items held in the Rare Book Room or Special Collections.

Special Collections also contains books about the history of our institution. To search the catalog for these materials, click on "Browse" in the red bar at the top of the page. In the search box enter: Shippensburg State College or Shippensburg University. You will get a list of subject headings that you can click on to view books in our collection.

Special Collections materials and Rare Books can be only be used in Archives & Special Collections. Please contact us to make an appointment.

SU Authors Collection

The Shippensburg University Authors Collection includes books and chapters in books published by the members of the Shippensburg University community--faculty, students, staff, administration, coaches, and alumni. The collection is displayed in the reference area on the main floor of the library. The books can be borrowed and book chapters can be photocopied. To find out if we have any books by a Shippensburg University author, search the library catalog for the author's name.

If you have any publications you would like to see in the collection, please contact Melanie Reed, 717-477-1325.

Manuscript & Oral History Collections

Special Collections houses several manuscript collections (personal papers of faculty and alumni) as well as oral history collections (projects conducted by SU students and faculty). Inventories for these collections are maintained on the Finding Aids page of this site.
