This excellent section of the New York Times website provides a virtual encyclopedia of subjects in the news. "Each topic page collects all the news, reference and archival information, photos, graphics, audio and video files published about the subject on NYTimes.com." -- website. Times Topics are organized by "Subjects", "People", "Places" and "Organizations". Click on "Subjects" and browse for the category you are looking for.
Use this source to identify the major news outlets in the major cities in your state. For example, you can search on a combination of city name, state name, and "newspaper", to get a list of newspapers by city.
