ESC193 - First Year Seminar

One hallmark of an empirical article is that the authors discuss data which they have collected themselves by conducting a study. These studies are published in academic journals.

Empirical articles typically include these sections (not all articles include all sections; or sections may be labeled differently or not at all):

• Abstract
• Introduction/Literature Review
• Method
  • Participants
  • Measures
  • Procedures
• Results
• Discussion
• References

We'll break up into groups and compare the articles below. Try to answer the following questions for each article.

• Who is the author(s)? Who does s/he work for? What are her/his qualifications?
• What is the purpose?
• Who is the intended audience?
• Where is it published (write down the publication title)? What type of publication is this?
• Is it empirical? Why or why not?
