Welcome to the library guide for your Exercise Science First Year Seminar. This guide will help you familiar yourself with types of database articles - in particular, empirical research articles. It also provides links to key library databases for Exercise Science Research.
One hallmark of an empirical article is that the authors discuss data which they have collected themselves by conducting a study. These studies are published in academic journals.
Empirical articles typically include these sections (not all articles include all sections; or sections may be labeled differently or not at all):
Type of Article | Audience of Article | Purpose of Article |
---|---|---|
Magazine | General Public | Overview of topic in everyday terms |
Trade Publication | Professionals in the Field | Continuting Education and Best Practices for Professionals |
Literature Review | Scholars and Students | Describe all the latest research on a topic |
Empirical Research Article | Scholars and Students | Describe an original research project and report the findings of the study |
We'll break up into groups and compare the articles below. Try to answer the following questions for each article.
