Community Services

Lehman Library provides access to community patrons such as Shippensburg Alumni, the Local Community, or members of local library consortia such as ACLCP students and faculty and KLN students, faculty and staff.

Online access to Lehman Library online database subscriptions requires a Shippensburg University login. Searching WorldCat, the Library Catalog,and the Journal Titles List can be done from anywhere.

Loan Periods

Loan Period

Patrons holding any type of community card may borrow the following:

  • Books: up to 15 items from the circulating collections, for 28 days. 
    These items may be renewed once; please contact libcirc@ship.edu with your name, your Lehman Library card number, and the titles and barcodes of each book that you need renewed.
  • Videos/DVD's and music CD's: up to 3 items of each type, for 14 days. 
    These items may not be renewed.

Restrictions

  • Reference books, reserve materials, and periodicals do not circulate.
  • Access to the subscription online databases is available to community patrons only from on campus.
  • Interlibrary Loan services are restricted to current Ship students, faculty, staff, and administrators.
  • An individual not returning materials after proper notification has been given will be prosecuted under P.L.106 of 1970.

Alumni

As a service to university alumni who are area residents, Lehman Library offers borrowing privileges through an Alumni Community Card. Applicants must have an undergraduate or graduate degree from Shippensburg and must present identification in the form of a valid driver's license.

Alumni Community Card Borrowing Policies

  • There is no fee to Alumni in good standing.
  • Alumni cards expire one year from the date of issue.
  • Only Shippensburg University Alumni in good standing will be granted borrowing privileges under this class. 
  • After submitting the alumni card application form, a 24 hour period to verify Alumni status with the Registrar's Office will apply.
  • Completed library cards may be picked up at the Circulation Desk after 1:00 p.m. on the next business day (Monday through Friday). Otherwise, cards will be mailed to the applicant's home address.
  • Alumni Community Cardholders are responsible for all materials borrowed on their card and are subject to established overdue fines and replacement costs.

Faculty Emeriti

Emeriti Faculty Office

Use and Borrowing Privileges:

The Emeriti Faculty Office, in room 211 of the Library, provides quiet space for independent research.

Guidelines:

  1. The office is available on a first-come, first-serve basis.
  2. The office door remains unlocked, but if it is locked, ask at the Information or Circulation Desk.
  3. A guest logon card is required to access the computers. This card is available for check out at the Circulation Desk.
  4. The office telephone is for local calls only. Dial 9 plus the number.
  5. There is no fee for printing.
  6. Any physical library materials used in the office should be returned to the Circulation Desk for re-shelving.
  7. Food and drink are permitted in the room.

As a service to Retired Shippensburg University Faculty, Lehman Library offers borrowing privileges through a Emeriti Faculty Card. There is no fee.

Loan Period: The loan period for most materials is end of term, no renewals.

Borrowing Policies:

Emeriti Faculty may borrow 50 items from the circulating general collection, the government documents collection, or Media/Curricular Collection. A maximum of 5 videos/DVDs and compact discs may be charged out. The loan period for videos/DVDs and compact discs is 2 weeks with no renewal. Reference books, reserve materials, and bound periodicals may not be borrowed.

Through a separate procedure, Emeriti Faculty may request off-campus access to the databases.

The emeriti cardholder is responsible for all materials borrowed on the card and is subject to established overdue fines and replacement costs.

Retired Staff

Retired Staff Card Borrowing Policies

As a service to Retired Shippensburg University Staff, Lehman Library offers borrowing privileges through a Retired Staff Card.

  • There is no fee.
  • The loan period for most materials is end of term.
  • Retired Staff may borrow 50 items from the circulating general collection and the government documents collection.
  • A maximum of 5 videos/DVD’s and compact discs may be charged out for a maximum of 2 weeks.
  • The online catalog is available off campus at library.ship.edu but access to the online databases is only available on campus.
  • The cardholder is responsible for all materials borrowed on the card and is subject to established overdue fines and replacement costs.

Local Community

As a service to area residents who are not otherwise affiliated with the University, Lehman Library offers borrowing privileges through a Local Community Card. Applicants must be 18 years of age and present identification in the form of a valid Pennsylvania driver's license.

Local Community Card Policies

  • $10 Annual Fee.
  • Community Patron Cards expire one year from the date of issue.
  • Community Cardholders are responsible for all materials borrowed on their card and are subject to established overdue fines and replacement costs.

High school students are encouraged to borrow Lehman Library materials through InterLibrary Loan at their high school libraries. Otherwise, a parent or legal guardian must accompany the student to the library and make application on the student's behalf.

ACLCP (Associated College Libraries of Central Pennsylvania)

As a service to faculty and students from ACLCP (Associated College Libraries of Central Pennsylvania) member colleges, Lehman Library offers borrowing privileges through an ACLCP Community Card. Applicants must present a valid faculty or student ID from an ACLCP member college. View ACLCP Library Catalogs 

ACLCP Community Card Policies

  • There is no fee to ACLCP students and faculty.
  • ACLCP Community Cards expire at the end of the semester in which they have been issued.
  • ACLCP Community Cardholders are responsible for all materials borrowed on their card and are subject to established overdue fines and replacement costs.
  • If materials are not promptly returned, overdue and billing notices will be sent to the patron's college or university library for further action.

KLN (Keystone Library Network)

As a service to faculty and students from Keystone Library Network (KLN) member libraries and all Commonwealth employees who have a valid State Library card, Lehman Library offers borrowing privileges through a KLN Community Card. Library staff must verify a KLN patron's status and standing before Shippensburg Library materials may be loaned. Patrons will be required to present their University ID card or State Library card. 

KLN Borrowing Policies

  • There is no fee to KLN students and faculty or Pennsylvania Commmonwealth employees.
  • There is a limit of 10 books for 28 days with one 28 day renewal. Audio and visual materials are limited to 3 items and may be borrowed for 14 days with no renewal.
  • KLN patrons are responsible for all materials borrowed on their card and are subject to established replacement costs. There are no overdue fines but patrons will be blocked from additional borrowing.
  • Patrons will be invoiced directly via e-mail for replacement fees and processing charges for lost materials.
  • If Shippensburg University is unable to secure payment, billing notices will be sent to the patron's home library for further action.
  • Patrons may return materials to any KLN library.
