National Libraries Week: State of America's Libraries 2022
It's National Library Week! That means we're celebrating libraries across the United States, and want to share with you the State of America's Libraries Special Report: Pandemic Year Two.
Some highlights:
During the year 2021, the American Library Association's Office for Intellectual Freedom tracked that more than 1,579 individual books were challenged or removed in school, public, and academic libraries.
Most challenges were against books by and about Black and LGBTQIA+ individuals
The 2020 Public Library Technology Support Report found that more than half of public libraries circulate technology items, including laptops, hotspots, and tablets for office use
The same study also found that 93% of public libraries do provide or plan to provide free WiFi to the public on their property even when the library is closed
Libraries are still some of the most trusted institutions in the United States, which is why they are uniquely prepared to help instruct in media and digital literacy, as well as partner with other groups to fight misinformation
