Guide to Anti-Racist Books

by Eyoel Delessa on 2020-08-28T10:19:00-04:00 | 0 Comments

The mistreatment, brutalization, and murder of black and brown people by police and by vigilantes has been exposed to the nation at large as a routine and systemic problem. Americans across the country are coming to grips with this reality and are looking for ways to eradicate racism. One such way is to become antiracist.

A transformational approach to be anti-racist is to engage in the "active process of identifying and eliminating racism by changing systems, organizational structures, policies and practices, and attitudes so that power is redistributed and shared equitably" (NAC International Perspectives: Women and Global Solidarity). One example of this is the Minneapolis city council, after George Floyd's death, re-purposing 1.1 million dollars, moving funding from the police department budget to invest in the city's health department.

To help students, faculty, and staff learn more about antiracism and how to engage with the ideas, history, and theories behind antiracism,  Dr. Kirk Moll, Associate Professor  and a reference and research librarian at Shippensburg University, other library colleagues, and members of Moving Circles and Not in Our Town, anti-racism groups based in Carlisle, PA, developed a Guide to Anti-Racist Books. This guide gives users an exhaustive number of ways to peruse and grow their knowledge of antiracism ideas and concepts, from definitions to biographies to social movements. Check out the guide here.
