The week of September 18-24, the Ezra Lehman Memorial Library will observe Banned Books Week, an annual celebration of intellectual freedom and an acknowledgement of the challenges that controversial books face in libraries and school curricula.
In 2021, the American Library Association’s Office for Intellectual Freedom tracked 729 censorship attempts of 1,597 individual books in library, school, and university collections. Here are the top 10 most challenged books of 2021:
The 729 censorship attempts in 2021 represents a significant rise in attempts to ban books and materials from libraries and curricula. In 2020, only 156 challenges were recorded, of 273 books. Below are the statistics, representing the who, where, and why of book bans in 2021:
